News in the Digital Age
If you're following tech news, it was pretty big that David Pogue was leaving the NYT to go to Yahoo Tech (splashier in the new year). And equally news that Walt Mossberg with Kara Swisher taking All Things D independent of the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones mantle. But it was seeing the great story of Pogue inviting former Wash Post tech writer Rob Pegoraro to bring his content also to Yahoo Tech that got me to think about these old line great newspapers that haven't really turned the corner to thinking fully digitally.
It was good news when a neighbor who's a Wash Post writer invited my comments on the trying to get it right Washington Post IOS App, but the Post has been trying to polish a workable online subscription for the many readers outside its print delivery area. And the New York Times has its model.
Still, beyond tech writing, seeing the blossoming of real online news writing outside the traditional channels, whether The Magazine (subscription based), or the Beacon Reader style of backing individual writers to gain access to the publication, or the many more locally based news, whether Patch type , or smaller independent suggests that nobody is waiting for the traditional papers to make a full transition. Let's just hope we don't lose depth and complexity as we may move more fully into the digital news world.
And back to tech, look for new Yahoo Tech with it's great talent and vibrant All Things D in the new year.
