Yahoo Newly Reinvigorated

Image
Paul Krugman's piece about " E Empires " linked to a Business Insider article about Marissa Mayer, the "turnaround" CEO of Yahoo. Riffing about the 14th Century North African historian and philosopher  Ibn Khaldun  who intuited  a rhythm to the rise and fall of dynasties, Krugman says   " Marissa Mayer  doesn’t look much like a fierce Bedouin chieftain, but she’s arguably filling the same functional role."  Well more about Krugman's piece later; now I know how the new Yahoo Email app on my iPad came about  - and yes, purple is good.  I also tried Yahoo Weather on my iPhone and it is way cool.  So when is the last time the ideas of "Yahoo" and "cool" came in the same sentence.  Plus we haven't even mentioned Flickr that now provides 1 TB of free photo sharing.   While I'm certainly a Google fan and robust user of Google apps, we as consumers benefit with more competitors and more choices so it is good for all us to s...

Beware of a phishing campaign - no free Apple Store Gift card

Wanted to warn folks used to getting Apple Store emails like this. Don't get hooked by this Apple Store phishing campaign by Steven SandeAug 9th 2013 at 2:00PM Apple fans beware! A new email phishing campaign dangling a bogus US$200 Apple Store gift card as bait to snag unsuspecting victims is making the rounds, according to security firm Webroot. That data could be enough to make you the victim of identity theft if you fall for this deadly hook. Apple never just randomly sends out gift cards. In cases where the company h...

This time, just a reminder to folks running Macs with Lion 10.7 or Mountain Lion 10.8 that sharing a snippet of text, a link to a website, a photo, a document, or nearly anything else with another Mac user couldn't be easier than AirDrop. Today, at a user group meeting where we worked on our Pi Podcast of Rob Pegoraro 's talk last month, I wanted to move some text with credential information from a Pi laptop to my own MBP sitting nearby.  I opened a Finder window on each machine, chose Airdrop on each, then on the Pi laptop dragged my selected text to the icon of my MBP and voila was reminded of how easy this is. So quick tutorial: Open a Finder window, and look along the left and select Airdrop. With AirDrop selected, the Finder window...

So a bunch of MLB players are suspended for the season.  ARod is penalized the most so he's going to appeal.  Because he's appealing he will play the rest of this season.  I feel like an announcer should chime in, "Don't take performing enhancing drugs, don't get suspended but be able to play this season.  Get Direct TV!
