Sharing files, links, content in Mac OS through Airdrop

Second in episodic series of how easiest to push or transfer information or content.  Some time ago, I wrote about using AirPlay get to content from a Mac or IOS device to an HD TV through Apple TV.  More on this to come soon.

This time, just a reminder to folks running Macs with Lion 10.7 or Mountain Lion 10.8 that sharing a snippet of text, a link to a website, a photo, a document, or nearly anything else with another Mac user couldn't be easier than AirDrop.

Today, at a user group meeting where we worked on our Pi Podcast of Rob Pegoraro's talk last month, I wanted to move some text with credential information from a Pi laptop to my own MBP sitting nearby.  I opened a Finder window on each machine, chose Airdrop on each, then on the Pi laptop dragged my selected text to the icon of my MBP and voila was reminded of how easy this is.

So quick tutorial:
Open a Finder window, and look along the left and select Airdrop.
With AirDrop selected, the Finder window shows your Mac at the bottom and above it any other macs in the same room that have Finder window open with AirDrop selcted.  This works so long as the Macs have wifi turned on even if unconnected to a wifi network.  Now find a file or link or selection of text you want to transfer, drag it to the AirDrop window and drop it on the Mac to which you would like to direct the content.  You'll get a pop up asking if you want to send the content, and if you click yes, the recipient will get a similar popup asking if they want to accept the content.

Only necessary is for the Macs to be running 10.7 or 10.8, have wifi enabled, and have Finder windows open, with AirDrop selected.

And coming soon with IOS 7 will be AirDrop for IOS devices - this will ease moving content among all Mac devices far easier so look for it!
