AirPlay Mirrowing through Apple TV

  • When family was visiting with an iPad 3, finally had a chance to try out AirPlay Mirrowing to share screen with our HD TV, through the Apple TV (v. 2) we have plugged in via HDMI.

Took us a bit to find the Airplay app in the open apps view at the bottom (haven't figured out why it's not an app or setting like everything else), but once we did, and turned Airplay on in the Apple TV (after a firmware update), screen mirroring worked like magic for all type of content.  This also worked easily on my iPhone 5, but of course no joy with mid 2010 MacBook Pro.  Airplay works for Apple TV 2 and 3, and newer ipads and Macs.

So courtesy of a helpful article in the most recent Pi Journal - must join the Pi to see this great content - learned of a fix (even available for Windows) called AirParrot.  This app expands the devices that can send content wirelessly to your HD TV through the Apple TV.  Doesn't work as elegantly as the solution Apple offers for newer devices - e.g. must separately install the driver to get audio with your video - but expands the Apple TV's offerings to anything you can stream from the web.

For some time, I've been talking to folks who work in offices that have conference rooms with big HD sets on the wall that they use for presentations.  I tell them they'll get points if they suggest connecting a small Apple TV device via HDMI and configure the Apple TV to use the office wifi network.  Then, anyone coming to a meeting with an iphone or ipad and -- using the same wifi network -- can wirelessly put their content on the TV for all to see, whether web streaming content, or a prezi presentation (or more pedestrian keynote or powerpoint....)   And as noted above, AirParrot expands the devices that can send the content to older Macs and also Windows PCs.  Banish those legacy vga to HDMI cables!  I'm certain this type of functionality will expand and not at all surprised Apple started the ball rolling.
